Allalinhorn

So, it’s the morning of our climb! We had plans to take the first gondola up to the top station at 7am. However, when we arrived, we were met with hoards of future professional skiers.

Apparently, there’s a junior worlds ski camp that’s held in Saas Fee each summer. So what you see here are some of the world’s top U18 skiers! We were surrounded by Team Canada. These kids have all sorts of drama in their lives. Crazy.

About 1.5h later, we arrived at the top station, and we followed the kids towards the mountain

We quickly geared up, and set off towards the mountain! We walked on one of the groomed trails, while kids whizzed by us at who knows how fast. The whole time I was thinking, “don’t get speared by some punk’s skis…”

After we crossed the many ski runs, we hit the glacier and roped up!

There were numerous ice falls that morning. The kids below cheered for each one! Mary and I worried about the snow conditions!

My first man-made bridge crossing!

Mary on her way up!

It hadn’t snowed in a while, so the boot pack was very handy to guide us around the crevasses

What we have here, is Mary, and random wall of stuff!

Crevasse!

Meandering our way towards Feejoch! It seemed like everyone that passed us was at least 50-years old. Very impressive stuff!

Two teams heading towards the summit!

At Feejoch!

The Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa massif, and all the other peaks in Zermatt!

It was getting close to the 11am, and the forecast called for weather to move in around 1:30pm. We didn’t think we’d have time to tag the summit, and make it down before those storms, so we turned around at Feejoch.

One last look!

Descending

After we got back to the ski area, we ran into some other folks and their pup! That pup has summited seven of the 4000m peaks in the Alps!

We eventually got back to the top station. We lounged in the lounge chairs, ate our snacks, and waited for the weather to arrive…

The weather never arrived…

We eventually got back to town… you can see the clouds blanketing Allalinhorn (towards the left)

So we didn’t get our objective… oh well! It woulda sucked to have gotten stuck in that cloud.
