Fremont Solstice (NSFW)

This weekend was the Fremont Art Council’s annual Solstice Parade! I had missed the previous two parades, and was excited to attend this year’s festivities. Clare joined me for her first parade, and it was pretty classic!

Back in 2007, when I had just moved to Seattle for an internship, my lead at work told me to check out solstice. It was my first weekend in town, and he described it as “very Seattle.” Thus, I followed his advice, and after that, I was pretty much sold on the PNW! So, after all these years, what makes a good Solstice Parade??? I’d break it down like this:

Of course, the cyclists!

^It’s the 100-year anniversary of the National Parks Service, and the folks who were organizing the ride did their part to celebrate!

A good headdress for the grand marshals! or the dancers that follow them!

Intricate and beautiful costumes!

Good song and dance!

And of course, the creative costumes…

The really good years have political commentary!

What else…? Ah yes! Living sculptures and cool floats!

Zombies were a thing! I didn’t see any this year though…

…and of course, the future hippies!

You can see a lot more on my flickr! <- this set would be very NSFW
