Sydney

So my itinerary was setup for a 23.5-hour layover in Sydney, which was perfect, because I like ending trips in another city. I booked the local Hilton for the night as the exchange rate was pretty skewed to my favor, and I was upgraded to a fancy room on check-in! Not a bad way to end a somewhat messy trip!

This hotel room might have had larger living spaces than my apartment.

One downside to this? There were long elevator rides from the 39th floor. On the flip side? The nice views!

Now what’s up with those clouds? Well you see, not only was NZ experiencing crappy weather, Sydney was too… Seriously! One months worth of rain in two days? UGH. I was hoping to do the bridge climb, but instead, I drank and snacked a bit in the lounge, and then ventured out to the Art Gallery N.S.W. for the night.

Awesomely, it turned out to be their version of First Thursday (but on a Wednesday), and there was a buncha stuff happening there! There was some comedian that was hard to understand (those accents…), drinks, and all sorts of pretentious museum happenings 🙂

^this mom had her two kids sketching paintings of old school Jesus. Based on these historical paintings, it seems that Jesus lost his nightlight abilities in his adult form.

The original “haters gonna hate.”

Paint me like one of your French girls~

^OK, actually this is a really nice piece of art.

Can you spot the gremlins? and 1800’s Waldo?

Hey look! it’s America! and Canada!

^this painting had its own special viewing section and special lighting #USA! USA!

The modern wing had modern things, and modern millennials…

These faces and things were made out of old VHS tapes of violent war films

Australian aboriginal work

Modern installations use modern things

This room was for this guy.

The main collection had lovely views of Milford Sound.

^I want to go to there.

By now, I had spent over two hours at the awesomely huge museum. Also, it had stopped raining, so I left to grab a shot of the opera house and local bridge

After getting this shot, the clouds unleashed another week’s worth of rain in about 6-minutes. Drenched, I called a cab to a restaurant, Chaco Bar, that I had read about on the internets. It was a good meal, but honestly, Issian is better. The neighborhood where the restaurant was pretty rad though, and had some cool street art

Afterwards, I returned to the hotel, and dried out the contents of my luggage. Oh yeah, it was raining so hard at the airport, that my suitcase got drenched during the unloading process. Fucking climate change. The next day, I woke up early to find that the storms were still strong… but after breakfast, the clouds parted slightly, so I ran down to the harbour to check out the Contemporary Art Museum!

I like most things that take up multiple walls

The special exhibition for the summer was Grayson Perry, this bloke who makes cool sculptures, vases, and maps

Kids who are up to no good. Seriously…

You see, the contrast of a Japanese cherry blossom and Tony Hawk exploding off a mega exploding halfpipe is an allegory for things that the artist feels deeeeeeply about! #ART

OK, his maps are seriously neat. Zoom in! Enjoy!

Lastly, typical of trips to places where I want to do outdoorsy things, the weather cleared up a few hours before my flight. Oh well.

What else happened… oh yeah, on the train ride to the airport, I had a nice convo with a Swiss tourist. We were all happy to go home, and then I got news that my flight had been delayed 7-hours. Luckily, Qantas placed me onto an United flight, where a kid literally kicked a cup of ginger ale out of my hand. The whole cabin gasped as the ginger ale exited my cup, sailed through the low pressure aluminum tube, and landed on the guy in the row in front of us… Who was sleeping… and didn’t notice… PHEW!!! CLOSE ONE!

I then asked for some wine, and told the punk that if he knocked over this glass, that his dad would have to pay for a new one, and then I watched the last season of Girls.

Ok, that last convo didn’t really happen, but I really did watch the whole season of Girls. It was better than the previous! Also, United didn’t censor things… delightful!

THE END.
